As Danforth questions Elizabeth, she keeps looking to John for guidance. So Danforth callsfor Elizabeth to testify. He tells Danforth to bring out his wife, Elizabeth, and she will not lie. In court, John says Abigail is a whore and he can prove it. ![]() Now, along with his name in the community, his life is at stake. This test becomes exponentially harder when John realizes that Abigail will “ruin with ” (80). John must admit to the court and the town that he committed adultery, in hope of saving his friends and wife. He must take responsibility for a crime he committed “in the proper place -where beasts are bedded” (110). But Proctor faces a test that is near insurmountable. With their name, life,and well being on the line, John Proctor, Mary Warren, and Giles Corey each face their own crucible.John Proctor faces hardships just as everyone else does. No one is safe from the hangings not even the most pious saints of the town.
